| Extrem PFDs - OUT NOW |
|
The new Extrem and Amp PFD’s are in stores now! The first batch has arrived and we are massively excited about getting them out for you all to use. There is much going on with the design of the Extrem, so we have done a mini site, which amongst other things details its amazing fifteen-year history.
See the EV Evolution here.

| AUTUMN EVENTS |
 |
September to November is always busy here at Palm as its trade show season. In October all the UK dealers come to our Clevedon HQ to check out the new products coming over the next year.
We got a great response with over 80 visitors attending and some great feedback on the range – many thanks to all who visited. But, we also try and get out on the road and meet paddlers at this time of year as it’s a great to hear stories of those winding down from the summer whilst meeting others gearing up ready for the winter.
We went along to the fantastic South West Canoe Show with our new boat brands and also journeyed up to Scotland to help at Paddle 09.
|
| COMPETITION ROUNDUP |

|
Along with trade style activity there are also plenty of competitive events on in the early autumn.
Team paddler Andrew Holcombe went up against some of the best WW racers on the planet in the Sickline Extreme Race World Championships to finish in the top five, followed by a win and a new course record at the infamous Green Race.
Ed Smith as always has been a busy boy and a great multidiscaplinarian - first joining Matt Tidy to race his Nomad to second in the Etive Extreme race and then changing boats and again finishing in silver medal position at the British Freestyle Championships. Way to go.

| CARDIFF OUTDOOR ACTION SHOW |
 |
We’ve had quite a lot going on in the capital of Wales this year. First a demo day at the new Up & Under watersports store in May, then a collaboration to promote canoeing in Welsh schools with Canoe Wales at the national Youth Eisteddfod (a festival of culture, arts and performance) and most recently attending the harbour authority annual outdoor show.
The weekend was slightly mixed, if only because on Saturday the Lions rugby match was on and in Cardiff this means the streets are empty. However Sunday was fantastic with a bunch of families coming down to get gear for their holidays and kids trying canoeing for the first time on the pool. The big news though is the progress on the new whitewater course, which should be ready for next spring – watch this space.

| EKSTREMSPORTVEKO – NORWAY |
 |
Last week Team Palm paddlers Matt Tidy, Nick Horwood, and Lowri Davies were in Voss for the annual extreme sports festival 'Ekstremsportveko'. For one adrenaline fueled week long event, skydivers, BASE jumpers, skiers, bikers and kayakers from all over the world congregate in the small Norwegian town of Voss to go huge off cliffs, waterfalls, ramps and of course at the parties.
Once again, Team Palm were out in force and came back with impressive results. More pics and full results here.

THE BRITISH UNIVERSITIES KAYAK EXPEDITION 2009
|
|

You can find out more about the team and follow progress on their blog. We’ll catch up with them when they get back.
|
We found ourselves at Heathrow airport this week rendezvousing with the British Universities Kayak Expedition team just hours before they hopped on a plane to travel to this year’s expedition location – Vietnam!
As we have done with all previous Uniyaker expeditions we are providing Palm kit for the team with most using Dagger Nomad and Mamba kayaks on this voyage of discovery. With so few major river systems left unexplored they have opted to head up into the mountains of Vietnam to see what they can find – an area as you can imagine that could hold a few surprises. “The possibility of armaments or traps left from the conflict could be interesting,” said leader Luke Farrington “but it’s the Tigers that give me the fear. I think the water might be the easiest bit!”

| FACES OF PALM – Barney Caulfield, Product Designer |
|
Palm: Hey Barney, where do we find you?
In front of my Mac in West Asheville, North Carolina. Home town of the mighty Green Narrows and some fantastic mountain biking.
Palm: So you’re a ‘remote’ worker – how’s that in reality?
It works very well. I work from my home office, but I could (and have) worked from anywhere there is an internet connection! I am constantly in touch with Palm HQ through Skype video which makes discussing products easy as we can see the product and discuss it as If we were in the same room.
Palm: This is your fourth year working in this way with Palm, but your involvement goes much further back. How did it start?
I started making kayaking gear in my garage at age 17, I showed a few pieces to Andy Knight at Palm and they took me on when I graduated university in 1998. It was, and still is a dream job for a kayaker.
Palm: So what was the first piece you designed that went into production and how did that feel? Well, the garage-built Fusion Vest prototype got me the job originally, and that was one of the first products we took into production.
Palm: And is there a piece of gear that you are particularly proud of? I am still very proud of the Fusion Vest concept.
Palm: We constantly work on R&D (you should know as it’s a 6 day a week job) – what’s on the drawing board currently?
Well, the great thing about Palm is there is always a wide range of products to work on at any one time. PFDs, apparel, luggage, footwear, paddles and even inflatable kayaks ;-)

Barney Sent us a much cooler pic of himself… but we're not that kind!
Palm: Cool. So what about the future, what’s a kayaker to wear in say 10 years time?
I'm not sure, but it will be fun finding out along the way!
Palm: Right, quick fire to finish - it’s the design classics day out!
– A classic place to go to?
Upper Gauley in West Virginia to soak up the history of WW paddling in the US.
– A classic design you’d use to get there? 1998 Dodge Caravan mini-van. A classic paddle wagon in my eyes (but not many others)!
– A classic designer you’d go with with?
Well, if it's the Gauley, it would have to be Jim Snyder.
– And to finish a classic way to reminisce how good the day was?
Cold beer at the takeout for the win! |
